Regulations for Studies and Examinations for the Undergraduate Level

Chapter 1: Definitions

New Section

  • The meanings of the following words and phrases - wherever they appear in this Regulation - are as defined in front of each, unless the context requires otherwise:

    • Academic Year: Two semesters or more and a summer term if available, or four levels or more and a summer level or two summer levels if available.

    • Academic System: The method of study followed in the university's colleges and institutes, whether by level system, semester system, or full academic year.

    • Semester: A time period of no less than fifteen weeks in the two-semester system, and no less than twelve weeks in the three-semester system, excluding registration, withdrawal, addition periods, and final exams.

    • Level of Study: A study method, where the time period is less than a semester, not less than four weeks, and not more than eight weeks, with a total of no less than forty weeks of study in the year.

    • Full Academic Year: A time period of no less than forty weeks in the year.

    • Summer Semester: A time period of no less than eight weeks for the two-semester system, and no less than six weeks for the three-semester system, during which the duration allocated for each course is doubled.

    • Summer Level: A time period of no less than four weeks for the level of study, during which the duration allocated for each course is doubled.

    • Study Plan: A set of mandatory, elective, and free courses, the total units of which constitute the graduation requirements that the student must successfully complete to obtain a degree in the specified major.

    • Course: The subject in the plan of each program, including a number, code, and description of the content, subject to monitoring, evaluation, and development in each department, and may be taught independently, or have a prerequisite or a co-requisite.

    • Credit Unit: The weekly theoretical lecture (or clinical lesson or exercise lesson) that lasts no less than fifty minutes, or the practical lesson that lasts no less than one hundred minutes, or the field lesson specified in the study plan.

    • Teaching Methods: Various teaching methods including: in-person education, blended learning, distance education, self-directed learning, and other educational patterns.

    • Academic Bridging Program: The program designed to complete studies from diploma to bachelor's degree.

    • Coursework Grade: The grade awarded for the work obtained by the student during the study in a level of study, semester, or full academic year - if applicable - including tests, research, and educational activities related to the course.

    • Final Exam: An exam in the course, held once at the end of teaching the course in the level of study, semester, or full academic year.

    • Final Exam Grade: The grade obtained by the student in each course in the final exam.

    • Final Grade: The sum of the coursework grades, to which the final exam grade for each course is added, and the total grade is calculated out of one hundred.

    • Academic Record: A detailed statement that includes all the courses studied by the student, the grades obtained, and includes: the two averages (semester and cumulative).

    • Visiting Student: A student who studies some courses at another university, or at a branch of the university to which they belong without transferring.

    • Grade: A description of the percentage or the letter symbol of the final grade obtained by the student in any course.

    • Incomplete Grade: A grade recorded for each course that the student is unable to complete its requirements by the specified deadline, denoted in the academic record by the symbol (I) or (IC).

    • Continuous Grade: A grade recorded for each course that requires more than one semester to complete its study, denoted by the symbol (M) or (IP).

    • Semester Average: The result of dividing the total points obtained by the student by the total units assigned for all courses studied in any semester, level of study, or full academic year, with points calculated by multiplying the assigned unit by the weight of the grade obtained in each course studied by the student.

    • Cumulative Average: The result of dividing the total points obtained by the student in all courses studied since joining the university by the total units assigned for those courses.

    • Overall Grade: A description of the level of academic achievement of the student during their study period at the university.

    • Study Load: The total units of study that the student is allowed to register for in a level of study, semester, or specified full academic year by the University Council.

Article 2

  • The purpose of this Regulation is to organize the mechanism and Procedures for study and examinations at the university, in a way that enhances the efficiency and quality of the educational process and academic Procedures for the stage following the secondary school stage.

Article 3

  • The provisions of this Regulation apply to the universities that implement the Higher Education Council and Universities System issued by Royal Decree No. (M/8) dated 4/6/1414 AH, and to the universities that implement the Universities System issued by Royal Decree No. (M/27) dated 2/3/1441 AH.

Chapter 3: Study Regulations

Article 4

  • 1. The university shall adhere to the following when approving its programs in the specified order:

    • A. The Unified Saudi Classification for Educational Levels and Specializations, issued by the Council of Ministers Resolution No. (75) dated 27/1/1442 AH, and any amendments or updates thereto.

    • B. The National Qualifications Framework in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, issued by the Board of Directors of the Education and Training Evaluation Commission in its first meeting of the second term held on 16/6/1441 AH, and any amendments or updates thereto.

  • 2. The student progresses in their studies according to the academic system and the study plan approved by the University Council.

New Section

  • The academic year is divided, and the graduation requirements for obtaining the academic degree are distributed according to the academic system and the study plan approved by the University Council, as follows:

    • A- Two semesters or more, and there may be a summer semester, provided that its duration is counted as half the duration of the regular semester.

    • B- Four or more academic levels, with each academic level not being less than four weeks as a minimum and not exceeding eight weeks as a maximum, and the total number of academic weeks during the year should not be less than forty weeks, and there may be a summer level or two summer levels if available, with its duration counted as half the duration of the academic level.

New Section

  • The study in certain colleges and institutes may be based on the full academic year in accordance with the rules and procedures approved by the University Council.

Article 7

  • Subject to the decisions issued by the Council of Universities Affairs, the University Council may, based on the proposals of the councils of colleges or institutes, adopt one or more types of education in the programs, as permitted by the nature of the study therein.
